Alkaline Foods for Vibrant Health

Our typical American diet is full of acid producing foods.  Maybe you don't suffer the consequences with heart burn, indigestion or anything, but it takes its toll on your overall health.  Our bodies were made to be balanced and ever so slightly on the alkaline side.  The pH levels should be 7.365 to be exact for the body to survive.  Yes.  Survive.

When a person ingests food to "burn" for fuel, the digestive and metabolic process transforms it into a kind of ash which is either acidic or alkaline.  The laws of biochemistry explain that it is NOT the organic matter of foods (whether the food itself is acidic or alkaline) but their INorganic matter (such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, sulfur, or phosphorous - which is how food is broken down chemically) that determines either the acidity of alkalinity of this ashy residue.

Now when the body is not given alkaline foods to keep the pH "right", the body (in its amazing quest for survival) will manage to draw what it needs from wherever it can get it --- like your bones or other vital tissues.  You may think it's cool you don't have acidosis or other symptoms (yet!) but do you know how your bones are doing?  (think osteoporosis - which can be totally avoided with a good diet.)  If you suffer from fatigue this may be one reason why.  I've had clients do a total about face with fatigue as soon as they got that pH up to the low 7's.  It really makes a difference!

So here are some foods to include on a daily basis to make sure you are getting a balance that will work well to combat an acidic pH.

Root Vegetables - You can't eat enough of them.  Beets, carrots, turnips, rutabaga, horseradish.  They will keep you feeling satiated and better grounded.

Cruciferous vegetables - You know these: broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, etc.

Leafy greens - Kale, swiss chard, spinach.

Garlic - this miracle food encourages overall health and is beneficial for promoting cardiovascular and immune health by lowering blood pressure, cleansing the liver and fighting off disease.

Cayenne peppers - (capsicum) is one of the most alkalizing foods.  It's also packed with antibacterial properties and is a rich supply of Vitamin A.

Lemons - most alkalizing of all!  Most people are shocked at this but this is how it breaks down chemically in your body.  It is often recommended as immediate relief for hyperacidity and heartburn.  Of course you probably know it for being great for coughs, colds, and flu.  It will energize the liver and promote detoxification.  (I have lemon in my water all day long, and in my tea.)

Do you hear your mother saying "Eat your vegetables!"?  Mom was right.  She may not have been a biochemist, but then moms seem to have an uncanny knack for knowing just the right stuff to keep you  healthy.  If you want a real suggestion (of course you do!) eat two veggies per serving of meat.  That just isn't hard at all.

Speaking of mom, the only thing she probably said that I would say shhhh, don't listen to her, is drinking milk.  It breaks down chemically into acid - I forgive her, she didn't know biochemistry after all.  All dairy breaks down into acid. Use sparingly. ( I can't resist a good cheese but I save that as a treat on weekends.)

If you, or someone you know, is going thru any kind of digestive distress or constant acidosis, get some pH papers (Amazon has them) and check your urine for a pH reading.  It could be easier than you'd think to turn things around. It usually is!

  1. This is such an important post! 9 years ago Jan 5 I heard the words I never want to hear again: You have cancer. Eating from the alkaline food groups helps me stay healthy and cancer free.

Part of my resolve to stay this way - a cup of coffee and a glass of wine are now reserved for the weekend only. I know how acidic they are despite my love for them.

  2. Thank you. This is great advice. Did NOT know this about lemons, though, so thank you for sharing. I would love to reserve my coffee and glass of wine for special occasions only, but haven't been successful thus far. :( However, DO eat tons of veggies!

    1. Hi Kathy,
What starts out as acidic is often "adjusted" in the body. I know you eat your veggies, good girl! As for wine, I have my good days.........and then there are the other ones, haha!

  3. "I did not know that!" Johnny Carson quote.

Was thinking I need to add some food I don't know about. See that I'm doing it right. (Wish I had all my life. Ate way too much protein.)

    1. Hi Cynthia,
I really believe it's never too late to come around to smart eating. Hey I had an addiction to Coke AND to Oreo cookies. DUH! DUH! DUH! No more of either - ever!

  5. Another great post and I am just switching from my glass of lemon water "cold" in the afternoons, to my cup of "hot" lemon water in the mornings...I have a large glass of plain water to start the day...This is also grapefruit season at our house and I have to be very careful about it being too acidic ...

My book group of 11 years served wine and lemon water at each meeting and that is one place I learned about the bone connection and acid. Two of our members have major bone loss and were just working on exercise, but have found a change of diet to be extremely helpful.

Oh I always learn so much when I stop by to read here...Thank you for keeping us informed

  6. Such wonderful advice, but I have always wondered if the lemon water is hard on the enamel on teeth. I do drink some lemon water in the morning, but am worried that it does erode enamel. Do you know if we have to worry about that? And is hot lemon water harder on teeth than the cold?
Thanks for all of the great posts you write!

  7. Hi Jean,
I wouldn't avoid lemon water, just don't drink it constantly - maybe once or twice a day. If you are that concerned about your enamel, use a straw in your glass. The benefits of the lemon, in moderation as in all things, are too good for you to skip. Temperature shouldn't matter. My favorite winter drink is cranberry juice hot with lemon. I drink that when "bored" with tea or as a substitute for hot cocoa to get the winter chill out!

  8. Hi Susan
Wonderful advise and a great article. I reversed my osteoporosis by adopting an alkaline diet. I create recipes using everyday food that we are all familiar with. I post on cookalkaline.com. Please take a look.

  9. Hi Sari,
I definitely will visit! I've no doubt you reversed your osteoporosis with diet changes. Just about everything people take drugs for can be eliminated if doctors were more into nutrition and supplements. They sold out to BigPharma! It didn't used to be this bad. But there is information out there - like your blog and mine, where people can learn without days of research they don't want to do. Thanks for all you do!

  10. Well, that was interesting. I didn't know about the the need for a balance. Fortunately, I do eat many of the alkaline foods you mentioned.

I recently started putting lemon in my water. It's also good for people prone to kidney stones.

Thanks for this post, as always. BTW I read the comments as well because I gain a lot of information from your readers AND your replies:~)

  12. I was very surprised about lemons...and pleased! I like to squeeze a slice of lemon in a glass of water. I find I drink a lot more water that way. In fact, I'm going to go get a glass right now.

  13. I thought I had left a message, but it didn't show up. Like others, I'm very surprised about lemons! I love to squeeze a lemon slice in my glass of water. I drink more water that way, too, so double bonus!
