I've received enough emails lately that keep asking me how I stay healthy and avoid the flu, ask the question why I'm so anti-flu-shot and so on. It's time to re-visit this rather seasonal topic.
When you read all the articles outlining just what is IN that precious flu shot - as well as the long-term effects some of these ingredients (mercury, anyone?) have on your body, not to mention the ineffectiveness of the shot, I'm always surprised people line up for this injection of poisons. Before you scream at me that your doctor says you are "high risk" and MUST take the shot, I'm well aware of that. There are "mandates" for some people due to age or disease. With studies actually proving how ineffective these shots are, I still don't understand the excitement and fuss to mandate injecting people with poisons.
That being said, here are a few things to do NOW to stay healthy and not pick up germs.
Wash your hands! In a restroom, I use the paper towel to then open the door, or I'll pull my sleeve down. Yeah, it may sound germaphobic but I touch NOTHING common. I use my forearm or shoulder to push open doors, never touch a handrail EVER, and always, always use the wipes that stores provide for shopping carts. I probably make hubs nuts, but I'm always telling him to stop using his hands to open doors. He's not a "believer". He also gets colds and bouts of godknowswhat kind of viruses. (Is there anything worse than a sick hubs? Doubtful.) During "flu season" we are generally wearing long-sleeved tops and coats. What do you think those sleeves are FOR? To keep your arms warm? Use them to open doors! Be glad they are there :)
It may sound stupid to say don't touch your face or rub your eyes. So there. I said it. We can be our own worst enemies sometimes. We can infect ourselves, and do, all the time.
Another thing - menus. A study was done on the germs found on restaurant menus! You would be shocked beyond belief to know how absolutely LOADED with stuff (trust me, it's disgusting) that menus have on them. After reading the menu in a restaurant I get up and wash my hands. Seriously. If you'd read this expose on the menu study that was done, you would too! Start NOW. You don't need to tell the restaurant, but do share this info with your fellow diners at your table. Quietly.
As for crowds, classrooms and in general masses of people, keep adhering to the above suggestions. The random air-borne viruses can usually be handled by a fully boosted up immune system. That means (you know what is coming) getting proper rest, reducing stress, and eating REAL food, supplementing with D-3 and Vitamin C - do not wait until you are symptomatic to take these either. People tell me they take C at the first sign of a cold. Great. Why get the "sign"?
There is an excellent book, "Beating the Flu" by J. E. Williams, if you want a very in-depth look at what you can do. It covers a LOT of material that is well worth knowing. You know - be prepared. Usually when we are, we don't need all we prepared for! May this be YOUR case, eh?
I've always got a flu shot because... And for another thing it's free in our town. BUT I'd already decided NO MORE FLU SHOTS for me. You have tripled my thought about it with your article.

I'm just relaying information. Right now there is so much coming out about the worthlessness and/or danger of these shots that I wanted to pass that along. Ultimately everyone has to make their own decisions about getting/not getting flu shots but those decisions should be informed ones.
DeleteI have never been able to tolerate flu shots, but my husband and children with Celiac Disease brought it home all the time...I was pregnant with child #2 the last time and it took me 6 weeks to regain my health.
ReplyDeleteI also carry a tea tree oil or Vick's inhaler when I fly because that zaps the nose entry and I carry throw away gloves when I travel and use the paper towel on the door handle also...I never want that again....
I used flu shots for several years to break the cycle...and for a strep allergy that my oldest had a herbalist gave her active strep dots to melt under her tongue and she never had it again.
I have had such big problems I just get so angry over the little ones and I hate being sick...Lots of d-3 and C for sure
Hi Patricia,
DeleteI don't like being sick either! Fortunately it doesn't happen often at all. Hubs gets sick and I think its because he touches so many "common" things, doors, railings etc. and he doesn't share my level of germophobia. I have chicken soup on stand-by come November!
THANK YOU for this timely post! I'm about to take an international flight to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico from Chicago O'Hare. I think of commercial flights as giant soup cans zipping through the stratosphere, filled with people sharing germs.
ReplyDeleteHi Laurie,
ReplyDeleteOMG, soup cans of germs is right on. That's one (of a few) reasons I do not fly anywhere if I can help it. I'm sure you are prepared and vigilant. Bon voyage!
Wow. I never thought about menus...thanks Susan. I'll be pulling out my "away germs" bottle and wiping down the menu:~) Can't you see it now? However, your suggestion is better and less obvious! I will give this serious consideration, next time I go out to dine.
ReplyDeleteAre there more flu bugs around today? When I was a kid, I don't ever being so careful about sickness, but today we really are...maybe with good reason?
p.a. I did watch a pickleball video. That looks like fun and you can an "official" pickleball racket...it's kind of cute, but I can see that the game is fast and maybe bruises are common:~)
Hi Sara,
DeleteI can't say that there are MORE germs today than when we were kids (I've thought about this too!) but I do know that most people have severely comprised immune systems due the horrific increase in chemicals "out there" today that we didn't have decades ago. The body (liver mostly but lymph glands, kidneys and others are involved) tries to keep us de-toxified as best it can - such a big challenge today. So important to nurture with NATURAL foods and supplements to keep it tuned up. While I do that, I think it helps to just plain out avoid whatever contaminants/germs that I can.
P-ball is a riot. Bruises? Uh, yah. Got most of mine from hitting MYSELF or running into the fence that surrounds our courts. There is Arnica for that - worked great actually. It's now in my P-ball bag!
Hi Susan~~I am so glad that you don't get the flu. Neither do I, cross my fingers and spin around backwards twice, lol. May I meekly say that I'm kinda the opposite re germs? I'm always touching everything I shouldn't and probably not washing hands halfway enough. Will try to remember some of this advice, though. Thank you!
