Walk Much???

I don't know about you, but I love to walk.  I walk with my crazy dogs, I walk alone, I walk with hubs.  Walking.  It's a good thing.  When I walk, I'm not doing anything but walking.  No headphones, because I'd miss the sounds of nature (like here at the lake the sound of an approaching bear for instance).  I don't take my cell phone with me.  I don't want to talk to anyone, just walk, breathe the fresh air and kind of commune with nature (tho not the bears!)

So what do I hear on the news?  It's comical, the news.  I've about deleted it from my life actually, but last week I see a report on the uptake in emergency room visits.  And why?  Because (please tell me that this is not you) people are TEXTING while walking.  They are getting hit by cars, tripping over godknowswhat and falling,  bumping into buildings, falling down stairs, curbs etc.

I couldn't make this up, you know.  And since I saw this on tv (of course it's true cuz it is on tv) I'm on the lookout for these folks.  I cannot imagine WHY anyone needs to be that attached to their phones.  Whenever I see some driver in a car texting I hook or yell - yes, that crazy lady would be me.  What is up with this insanity?  It is clearly dangerous whether you are driving OR walking for heaven's sake!   Beware!

You know about all the "research" being done on how dangerous the energy field around cell phones is, with it's potential for brain cancers etc etc.  The folks walking into cars texting may be exempt from the fear of this happening to them since in my opinion, they don't have brains to begin with!

As handy as these little things are (cell phones) don't you think there is a time and place for them?  I saw a family out to dinner last weekend and 4 of the 5 of them were on phones texting, checking weather, emails and whatever.  A women in the grocery store ran her grocery cart into mine while talking on the phone shopping.

Cell phones can be life savers.   They can also be the reason people end up in the emergency room.  Or worse yet, killed by a texting driver.

Let's all give some thought to how we use this little thing.  Try leaving it at home for just one day and see if you don't hear the world around you.  Or the approaching bear!

Those headphones on Ipods or whatever can be equally dangerous.  Bikers don't hear cars, joggers don't hear muggers - oh it's  mess!  People being too attached to these things can get hurt or hurt others.  So go ahead.  Call me "old-fashioned".  At least I will hear you!

  1. I like to walk a lot, too, SuZen. Mostly every day, except skipped yesterday. And may skip today because of a headache and almost-stuffy nose and a bit of lethargia, but you know, so often walking invigorates us. Thanks for sharing the benefits of this, KZen

    1. Hi Kathy,
Hope you're up and out soon! I sometimes dread having to walk the dogs, but we are ALL so much calmer afterwards, it sure is worth the effort.

  2. My husband and I are huge bicycle enthusiasts. We always turn our cell phones off when cycling - they are strictly for emergency purposes.

This is a GREAT article. Thank you for broaching this extremely important topic!

    1. Hi Laurie,
I have my cell phone with me for everything but kayaking (hubs learned the hard way since he always dumps getting in!)

  3. I love to walk - I do take my cellphone because when my knee gave out and I could not get up, I called for assistance to get out of the street and on my way. I encourage the seniors to keep their phones at least in their pockets when out walking....and when the dog charged the bikers and knocked them down...cracked ribs, cracked head, broken arm....broken legs...and totaled bikes...4 ambulances were there in 12 minutes with the cell phone being used...the cell phones took pictures and the dogs' owners had to pay all the medical bills and new bikes....they did not put their dogs down...
I just do not answer my phone when walking unless I come to a complete stop...and then I may just text, that I am out walking...get back to you...

I do not use ear buds and listen to music...I do not even like to listen to the radio if I am driving the car....

Our neighbor's daughter was on her new job after college and was texting at a street corner in LA..a drunk driver on the cellphone ran the light, ran into her and smashed her into the building behind her - she died the next day. Our neighborhood is full of warning signs about paying attention and nearly everyone will hear an ear full about distractions and safety up and down our street...
I do not know if it helps or not....but I do think there are so really good safety features to consider also...

We do have one town resident who reads books while walking - and another who sings....

I often wonder about common sense?
    good post here..
hope you are still having fun at the lake

    1. Hi Patricia,
My aunt was crashed into by a texting driver. She "recovered" but had nothing but pain for the whole following year. But she was lucky all in all. Others, not so much.

Cell phones can be so handy, as you've pointed out, and in emergencies, whether its yours or someone elses, extremely so. But I think people are, obviously, not using a great deal of common sense with them. I have mine with me at all times, esp. being alone at the lake here, but its for emergencies or yaking on the phone from home, on the sofa, or on the porch, not when I am mobilized.

Yes, thank you - having a great time here!
Pickleball 3 times a wk, golf practice 2-3 times, biking, kayaking, walking dogs. I SHOULD be losing weight - oh hahaha - but I'm sleeping better than ever. Of course I am, my body is exhausted! ha!
