There are sooo many studies out on diet soda. It's a huge multi-million dollar industry so do not expect any glowing truths to be revealed by the manufacturers. They are too busy counting their money at YOUR healths expense to care. Here is a sampling of the information - there are volumes out there - on the studies done showing the dangers of drinking diet soda. Do not fool yourself into thinking you are managing your weight with it. You are only managing your future potential disease.
Walter Reed Army Medical Center - showed that diet soda leaches calcium from our bodies. Over the course of two days 20 healthy women drank 24 ounces of diet soda, while the control group drank only water. Three hours after the diet-soda-drinking group had their last soda, their urine was analyzed. The diet soda group lost (on average) 6.85 milligrams more calcium and 41 milligrams more of phosphorous than the water-drinking group.
So maybe you aren't a chemist or a doctor, but I can assure you this loss is NOT good. The average person is more than likely not too concerned - or aware - that calcium and phosphorous are important to bodily functions. Their loss will take its toll over time and it will not be pretty! A steady diet of diet soda (or any soda for that matter) is an invitation to develop so many issues with your health that if you knew about this you would never, ever, drink this crap.
University of Texas Health Science Center - The short term effects of the synthetic sweetener aspartame, which is used in many diet sodas, can include headaches, mood swings, dizziness and memory loss. But the long-term effects may be devastating. Studies have linked high intake of aspartame to developing lymphoma, leukemia, cancerous tumors of the liver and peripheral nerves and a nerve-cell death within the brain.
See what I mean, folks? Do you really, really want to go on consuming this? Seriously? Drinking diet soda increases the risk of developing metabolic syndrome by 34% - this is a group of symptoms that include extra weight gain around the midsection, elevated insulin levels and increased blood pressure. When these symptoms occur together, they put a person at greater risk for diabetes, heart disease and other illnesses.
Diet soda will not help you to lose weight but it sure has the potential to muck up your health. I didn't even get into the osteoporosis angle and it's huge! If you look at the sales volume of this stuff being sold and consumed and compare that to the outrageous increases in the illnesses these days, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see a connection. Every time I see the smiley little logo for coke, I imagine the manufacturers smiling.........all the way to the bank! I watch people, young people, kids, drinking this soda like there is no tomorrow - oh no worries, it's fine, I feel great etc. etc. except there is a tomorrow and you may not feel so great then. To often people get to middle age, start experiencing health problems and wonder why. Is it just old age? Hell no. It's what they have been consuming for years with nary a care in the world. Kinda creeps up on you! Many symptoms and diseases can be reversed thru consuming a healthy diet. I help people do that all the time. It is rarely too late to correct problems, but why would anyone knowingly create them?
If you need further information on the dangers of consuming this, try looking up what Dr. Russell Blaylock has to say about the neuro toxic effects on the brain. It is chilling! You will not find any of the health advocate doctors - Dr. Mercola, Dr. Oz, Dr. Hyman, Dr. Andrew Weil, Dr. Ben etc - ever endorsing the consumption of ANY product with artificial sweeteners, let alone the calcium/phosphorous leaching sodas.

I agree, SuZen. We try not to drink any diet soda (pop) any more. In fact,we try not to drink pop at all. Except in the hospital Barry sipped on a can. :)
ReplyDeleteIsn't it shocking they even make that available in hospitals? What they usually serve as healing food (oh haha) is anything but! Been following your nursing progress - glad everything has gone smoothly. Hugs to Barry for a quick recovery!
DeleteThank you, dear SuZen, a thousand thanks.
DeleteI could not drink soda because of the caffeine and my mother thought it was too expensive except a toast with ginger ale New Years Eve...( I also had root beer floats but my neighbor made the root beer from sassafras herself...Wow! on a hot summers day
ReplyDeleteThen they made diet cola that was caffeine free...that and M&Ms were my hook/addiction to get through graduate school - I also smoked....the diet cola and M&M were harder to get off of than anything else.
My mother did use syrup of cola (Prescription) when I had an upset stomach - so it is a soothing taste to my often upset stomach ( especially as a child before we discovered I was intolerant to dairy) - I often wish I could have a spoonful now when I am trying to calm my stomach down...
But since I have liver and kidney problems now - well no thank you.
I often see folks who are diabetic drinking numerous cans of diet soda a day...even the skinny ones...I seems to be addicting.
Susan: I just talked to my mother about drinking diet soda. The good things was that she doesn't drink it. She has diabeties and I figured that she would be drinking it, but she said she already knew it wasn't good for her. She was one step ahead of me! ( :
ReplyDeleteI don't drink much soda. I prefer water or juice and I love gatorade after I get done exercising!
I love the information you shared here!
ReplyDeleteI can honestly say that it's been decades (plural) since I've had any soda - diet or otherwise.
I enjoy water with fresh lemon or lime squeezed into it. Cold in the summertime, hot in the wintertime. It's a healthy, whole body detox.
Great Information. I have drank regular & diet coke all my life and have recently developed an allergic reaction to one of the preservatives E211. It makes my lips, tongue or throat swell. Needless to say I don't drint it anymore. Trouble is E211 is in most soda drinks, orange juice and some cosmetics. There is so much stuff out there that are potentially life threatening.
ReplyDeleteSusan: It's funny to read Patricia's comment because the one time I will turn to regular coke is when I feel sick to my stomach. I remember my mom used to give us flat coke as a stomach remedy. I suppose my body remembers this because coke does make me feel better:~)
ReplyDeleteI try to drink a lot of water. Sometimes I have to mix it with juice because for some reason, water can be feel kind of sick, especially if I'm drinking a lot of it...like in summer. I just put a little bit of a juice I like into the water and it goes down without a whimper.
I've read about diet sodas and I'm glad I'm not addicted. I have some friends who are.
As usual, thanks for sharing this important health information!
