Ginger, in it's natural state, is one ugly little thing. But don't let it's looks deceive you! For thousands of years ginger has been a virtual medicine chest in Ayurvedics. According to a newsletter I get from Food Matters, here is a list of the benefits this one little root has within it:
Eat fresh ginger just before lunch to stoke a dull appetite and fire up your digestive juices if you weren't feeling hungry.
Ginger improves the absorption and assimilation of essential nutrients in the body.
Ginger clears the "microcirculatory channels" of the body, including the pesky sinuses that tend to flare up from time to time.
Chew on ginger (may be tossed with a bit of honey) to quell nausea, even if airsick.
Ginger helps to reduce flatulence - no more "toot-a-thons"!
If your tummy is moaning and groaning under cramps, munch on some ginger.
Reeling under joint pain? Ginger, with its anti-inflammatory properties - can bring relief. You can even add some ginger essential oil to a bath for aches in muscles and joints.
Chewing on ginger post-op, can reduce that nausea.
Stir up some ginger tea to get rid of throat and nose congestion. And when there is a nip in the air, the warming benefits of this tasty tea are even greater!
Bedroom blues? Try adding a gingery punch to a bowl of soup. (Ayurvedic texts credit ginger with aphrodisiac properties.
I keep a small bag of dried ginger in my car. Sometimes I find it a great way to overcome my desire to drive into a fast food place when I'm suddenly starving. It also calms my stomach. I'm trying to quit mints and gum chewing, and a bit of ginger goes a long way in that department too! I use ginger in a lot of my recipes and I've totally fallen in love with pickled ginger you can buy in small jars in some markets.
Let me know if you have tried it.
I used ginger in tablet form when I was on the cruise and it calmed my tummy down as the sea was rolling! Then I could enjoy my day in the Bahamas!
ReplyDeleteHi Diane! So glad that worked for you. There is probably nothing that would work for me on a boat - I just avoid them :)
Deleteyes, Yes, and YES again. We are avid ginger users. And NOT that this is healthy...but, did you know that in a pinch (only) Altoid's even have ginger-flavored "mints" (I don't know what else to call the little white "candy" in a tin). It's enough to blast the hair right out of your nose. If you're getting in the least bit car sick, these take care of it -- NOW!
ReplyDeleteHi Laurie - Good to know. I love having ginger in the car for a lot of reasons but blasting the hair out of my nose? Great tip! (haha)
DeleteI like ginger and am using the tea to get my through this hormone diet, which is working by the way, but has a lot of side effects.
ReplyDeleteDo You think I can find dried ginger at amazon? I need a trip to the Food Coop - am trying not to go because seeing all that food makes me feel so dang hungry. I sent my partner to the store this weekend.
My grandmother was such a proponent of ginger...and her ginger carrot soup was awesome...awesome
Thanks for these good words Suzen
Hi Patricia,
DeleteYou can find ANYthing at Amazon. I get so many supplements there, raw cacao, my precious shea butter and on and on. Love that place!
Ginger has great advantages, it is used as an ingredient in tea as it improves health. Even when people are suffering from cough they are given ginger as a home remedy.
ReplyDeleteYep, you got that right! Hope you use it regularly!
DeleteWe use fresh ginger almost daily.
ReplyDeleteI put powdered ginger in my concoction that starts with ground flax & chia seeds.
Thanks for all the reasons I do this.

Hi Cynthia,
DeleteI got a kick out of your "thanks for all the reasons I do this"! :)
I feel so better now that I have tried these Ginger remedies. I often have a problem with my sinuses as they keep on flaring and annoying me to no end. Now I always keep with me a few ounces of ginger tea to sip as I go through the day.
ReplyDeleteGood for you John! So many benefits of this ugly little root, huh? I really think Socrates was right when he said "Let food by thy medicine." In so many ways, just knowing the "powers" of certain every day foods can be a real blessing!
DeleteGinger is one of the favor spice in my country. The herbs also often used as raw material of traditional medicine
