Sounds crazy to eat yourself young I know, but think of eating yourself OLD. Which would you rather do? Your diet can have a huge impact on how fast you age. Remember if you don't feed and nourish the cells that help to keep you vital, that vitality goes away and symptoms/illnesses move right in!
There are too few times I actually agree with the babblings of the USDA. This is one monumental time of total agreement! They have come up with a scale called ORAC - which means Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity - and they rated some foods according to this scale. They discovered a small group of "super foods" that have up to 20 times the antioxidant power of other foods. These foods also have more antioxidant power than mega-doses of vitamin supplements.
In studies done with animals (they failed to say what animals but I don't know that it matters) the animals that were fed high ORAC foods had lower biological ages as measured by memory, balance and capillary strength. That's enough for me, I don't know about you.
The food that tops the ORAC list is prunes. Yes, I know. Prunes. Exciting, no? But just a few a day gives you more than you need. The others on the list are berries, kale, spinach, brussel sprouts, broccoli, alfafa sprouts, beets oranges, red bell peppers, red grapes and cherries.
Knowing you can mix up the foods on this list every day makes it easier to make sure you are getting enough antioxidants from food alone rather than vitamin pills.
Then there was a nice article on Natural News about anti-aging foods. Their list consisted of leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables, apricots, berries, olive oil, salmon (WILD only, never farmed!), tomatoes, raw almonds and avocado.
Put the two lists together and that is basically what I eat. Well, honestly I skip the prunes but I might actually buy some next week since they are twice as potent as the berries.
It isn't that hard to eat well. The bonus, aside from outstanding health and wellness and energy, is looking good! It's an all over good thing! Don't be a stranger to these foods, especially in summer when they are abundant!
The day this post is published will be my 65th birthday - eeegads, seriously! I am way too young to be this old. Could it be what I'm eating???????
happy, Happy, HAPPY birthday to YOU!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Laurie!
DeleteYes, it's definitely what you're eating--PLUS your young spirit! Happy Birthday to you! I didn't know this; fascinating. I will buy prunes next time we go to town. Also, don't they say that eating LESS will actually increase our years?
ReplyDeleteThanks Kathy! Yes, eating less as we get older is necessary - but we need to eat the GOOD stuff - veggies and fruits and nuts and seeds - less meat, dairy and little, if any, sugar or any white stuff. I so rarely eat bread any more it's like a treatful thing when I do. Being lean is a definite plus to adding more years - healthy ones!
DeleteHappy Birthday to you - way to young!
ReplyDeleteDid you have prune cake?
LOL - no prune cake, darn! Had apple pie in a bag - ever have one of those? Went bowling (first time in 40 yrs) and played bags with the kids. Fun day!
DeleteHappy Belated Birthday Susan,
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a great day! xo
Thanks Barb, it was so fun! And just think, I'm now going to declare going backwards with the numbers! YAY!
DeleteHappy Birthday Susan! Yay - 65 - what a milestone. And now I know why I feel so good after my blueberry/spinach breakfast smoothie. Or my kale salad for lunch! But I'm gonna have to think about the prunes.
