How many times do you say "I really want to do that someday." Or maybe "I wish I had time to try that." (fill in the that with whatever)? I think in my 30's I figured I had all the time in the world to try new things. In my 40's I was just way too busy. In my 50's I started thinking more about doing new things. And here, in my mid-sixties now, I am in the doing stage. It's now or never I figure.
Last year I took up kayaking. I'm not doing rapids, mind you, or "going under" - godforbid! But a good steady paddle around the lakes that our lake is connected to does a body good! I never expected to like this either. As long as where I go isn't choppy water, I'm fine. Great exercise for your upper body - namely those upper arms that tend to flap! I'm giving them something to flap about!
This year - are you sitting down? - I am taking up golf. Gulp. Oh why not? Hubs is a golfer, or should I say devotedly attached to the game kind of golfer. I'm taking lessons from a woman pro I think is a hoot - she is making this fun! It's great to challenge yourself to try new things. I'm keeping it light. I don't aspire to the WPGA and yet I love trying to teach my body all kinds of weird things, like golf swings. I'm like a pretzel unfolding and when I actually make contact ball I feel like I'm on fire - look out! I found a book "Yoga for Golfers". I hope it helps. Suffice to say starting decades ago may have been easier but I am determined to work on this - no more excuses.
The point of this post isn't about kayaking or golfing --- it is about DOING things. Just like eating healthy, or losing weight, or starting a walking program, going to the gym, whatever it is that you SAY you are going to do, but don't. Human beings are supremely creative when it comes to excuses, don't ya think? Listen to the ones you'll come up with.
I did a whole post on excuses back in the early blog years. I quoted from Dan Millman's book the same saying I put on my fridge when my kids were in high school: "Any excuse is good enough for me, but is is good enough for YOU?"
So I challenge you right now to at least make a sort of bucket list - how's that for definitive? Just write down some things that you want to do in the future. No sweat. Let it rip. Put down lots of things.
Ok. Here's the fun part! The future isn't going to get here. It's now. So pick one thing on that list and make the necessary time to do it - no excuses. Let me know how it goes. Also share your list here so that you may inspire others to say, hey, I want to do that too!
I love this post and your challenge:~) I'm thinking right now of what I should commit to. Golf is always a possibility because my partner, like your hubby, is addicted to the game. I often go with him when he can't get someone else. I usually take pictures while he works on his "game."
ReplyDeleteI also like the idea of Kayaking. We signed up once for a class, but it got cancelled due to weather and then we forgot about it. I might suggest this as a joint venture. We have so many different places to do this.
You sound so happy! I hope you enjoy this summer and keep at the golf.
Hi Sara,
DeleteGlad this post inspires. You don't need kayak lessons really. I had zero - it's just something you practice. Getting in and out of the darn thing is the trickiest part, haha! I haven't dumped yet - yet - no plans on getting wet!
SuZen, what a very cool challenge! Like Sara, I am pondering to what I might commit. Congrats on the kayaking and golf! It is so cool when we can get out of our patterned ruts and try something new!
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy,
DeleteI have a pretty long list of stuff to do or at least try. Needless to say I could work on golf forever - ha! I figure use it or lose it so I'll be active til I drop.
SuZen -

Amen siSTAR!
When we moved to this small town in the mountains, someone said, "If you don't play Bridge (We
ReplyDeletecould but didn't,)WHAT do you do?
We kayak, canoe, downhill ski, cross co. ski, ice & figure skate, road bike, mountain bike, hike, backpack, swim (not a lot tho' our pool membership is up our street), Scottish Country dance, International dance. What have I left out? I get Senior Moments.
We did our bucket list which was Travel. Husband likes it. I want to be HOME.
I want to become adept at Corel Painter 12, a fantastic program with a steep learning curve. I'm on my way! I'm also extending my proficiency with Photoshop. And I'm keeping my sense of humor about our place in the mountains, trees and all, being turned into toast last year. Our new little cabin will be much smaller and looks very vulnerable as it's being built on that now bare ridge.
ReplyDeleteHi Laurie,
ReplyDeleteYes, sadly, ain't it the truth!
Hi Cynthia,
ReplyDeleteFantastic! It may be fun to play cards, but really people need activity too and sounds like you sure are active!
Hey "monk" - good to see ya here! Great challenges for you. It's good to add on something physical as well. What would you choose?
