Most of the time I applaude everything Dr. Oz has on his show. I tape his shows and breeze thru quickly when I'm taking a break from studying or having a quiet evening at home. I always have a notepad when I watch the show and I'm as open to learning and trying new things as anyone.
However he had two shows last month that I screamed NO NO NO at the TV.
One show was "The Lazy Girls Guide to Getting Healthy". I'm sure that title was done for commercial value - all the lazy people would tune in to hear how they could continue their lazy ass ways and yet tell themselves they were on a health kick. (My OWN advice follows after my rant.)
So I'm gonna lecture Dr. Oz here. Do NOT perpetuate the lazy attitudes and mind sets out there. I have zero humor about this. There is nothing cutesy about being lazy when it comes to your health. Look at your audience for Godsake! Great sampling of the obesity trend! The Lazy Girls Guide should be to drop the lazy altogether, ramp up their metabolism with exercise and good food choices. Every one of the women he had as "assistants" were extremely over weight and nothing he told these women to do would have made an ounce worth of difference, despite his little charts exclaiming "doing this would mean you would loose 7 lbs in one year." Sorry Oz. Make it 70 lbs. and it will make a difference. And if they are lazy, they probably won't do it anyway! Very little mention of getting off those large butts and exercising - seriously? Lazy isn't healthy - period!
The other show that got me screaming was "hearing the truth, once and for all, about Aspartame". He has another doctor on explaining the safety of aspartame. Don't know who might have PAID her to say what she said, or if she is just oblivious to the serious side effects of aspartame. For Oz to say "Now we know the truth." is just wrong! It is an opinion, not a truth. There is far too much scientific proof that aspartame is the equivalent of a toxic poison for you to declare the "truth" of its safety.
Rather than saying "Hey Lazy people, you only have to do one little thing" here are several simple shifts toward healthier living. Do them ALL. Dr. Oz may pat you on head, I'm more into whoop ass.
Eat more beans! Packed with fiber, beans have a powerful range of health benefits, which includes helping to control blood sugar. Different beans have different benefits - black beans are high in antioxidants, soybeans (eat only organic) host the phytochemical family of isoflavones, white beans are potassium-laden, and adzuki beans pack in some carotenoids. Best of all beans are cheap and provide protein.
Eat within an hour of waking and every 3-4 hours throughout the day. Each "meal" must include a little fat and a little protein. Dieters think I'm nuts when I tell them this. This eating plan will up your metabolism, promote stable blood sugar and eliminate brain fogs. The bonus is, yes this is true, you will lose more weight this way - as long as you are doing some EXERCISE daily, even 20 min. of brisk walking at a minimum. So if you were confessing to being one of those lazy girls Dr. Oz was talking to, sorry honey, move it to lose it! To my knowledge, nobody has successfully lost weight or ramped up their health by just thinking about it.
Eat more nuts and seeds, preferably raw. Raw walnuts, almonds, hemp seeds, sunflower seeds, chia seeds. Sprinkle them on your foods, or just have 10 walnuts as a snack. They have fat, yes, but it is the good fat your brain needs. Count em! No eating the whole bag.
Swap veggies for grains whenever you can. Instead of pita bread with the humus, use carrots, cukes, broccoli - instead of eating nut butters on toast, put it on apples, bananas. I bought a cool little tool that slices up a zucchini into long strips which I use in lieu of pasta. Just saute the zucchini "noodles" in a bit of coconut or olive oil and top it with Parmesan and pine nuts - yummmm. Use lettuce leaves for bread when making sandwiches. (These tricks can be used for a week of no grains to see if you feel better without the gluten - I do this not because I'm gluten intolerant but I do have more energy without breads and pastas - but I do miss them! I allow an occasional piece of bread - it is now a treat, not an everyday consumption.)
Drink more water! Green and white teas will provide an antioxidant boost. (Save your money and do not buy vitamin waters or enhanced water.)
Walk more. Dance more. Stretch more. (Stretching is THE MOST helpful thing you can do for your body and it helps with those aches and pains, which could be due to NOT moving enough. Stretch everything daily.)
Laugh more. Smile more.
Read my blog more - comment more! (((((thank you!!)))))
p.s. to Dr. Oz - I really DO appreciate you are trying to make getting healthy an ok thing and you really are making a difference for some folks out there!
Commenting!☺ Your post is everything I try to live by. Being routinely active and eating conscientiously makes a difference. Many times when I go up or down the stairs in my 3-level home, especially if my routine walks outside are less than usual...I sometimes will go up and down twice before fetching the item. It's a simple habit that keeps me on my toes and feeling healthy. Little things do matter mentally and physically.
ReplyDeleteHi Wanda! Thanks so much for commenting! :) Sounds like you have some really good habits. You're so right, it DOES make a difference and often it's the little things, when added up, that count!
DeleteI will not be lazy today! I am inspired to make some beans for today's dinner--and to take a walk, no matter if it's raining or not. Good pertinent advice. And no aspartame--but I kicked that habit a few years ago. I will smile big time all day. Hopefully!
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy,
DeleteLOL, I make that vow not to be lazy pretty near every darn day! My trouble is I actually NEED a lazy day here and there to re-charge myself. The god of multi-tasking has given me an over abundance of abilities and often cracks the whip with "More! Get more done!" Sometimes I want to smack him! (No sexism intended)
I eat lots of beans and rice but oh my the gas related to those beanies is just overwhelming to contemplate.
ReplyDeleteI find wearing the FITBIT and filling in all their charts on line or cellphone has been very helpful...I wish the plantar faciistis would go away.
The FITBIT has me climbing 10 flights of stairs a day.
Still haven't found the right foods for me...
and I am hear reading on a regular basis - as you so thoughtfully read my posts too :)
mutual admiration society.
I have never been able to deal with aspartame..headaches and depression...right away.
Hi Patricia,
DeleteHave you tried MSM and curcumin for your plantar problem? That's what most holistic/natural alternative "recipes" say works well. That would be in addition to the Omega 3's, anti-oxidants and amino acids I assume (?) you are taking.
Beans can be a "problem" but seems to be more so when eaten them with carbs. Do you make them from dried beans - and do you change the water? I found that made a huge difference, changing the water.
Definitely a mutual admiration society!!!!
I think this article FINALLY hit me and I pledge to follow your advice, especially about the stretching. I've been SAYING I was gonna do it, today I am! I gave up on Dr. Oz quite a while ago when I felt he was "going commercial". I can't believe he takes every single supplement he says he takes every day....would take him an hour just to down the pills and cost him a fortune. I am now hoping to take a trip to your area in September...the savings account is increasing every month! I am thinking this trip won't include that big pizza or hamburger place we went to last time I visited?!
ReplyDeleteHi Diane! Yeah it's true we cannot "think" or "say" exercise - the intention to actually DO it just doesn't count. And hey, this isn't some dress rehearsal, man this is IT. I know what ya mean about Dr. Oz, but I still listen. I have a TON of sources and I don't agree with all of them all of the time. I'm a flexatarian, totally.
DeleteGreat news you're coming!!! We'll be up at the lake for Labor Day but home the rest of Sept. Just let me know which place you'll visit and when. I'm soooo ready!
S-T-R-E-T-C-H!
ReplyDeleteI am a huge proponent of stretching, Stretching, STRETCHING! If you do nothing else, S-T-R-E-T-C-H !!
- Laurie
Hi Laurie,
DeleteIndeed yes!!!! My little dogs do the greatest yoga stretches and they remind me to in case I forgot.
I am not currently taking cur cumin but I did for years and years....maybe that is the problem? and I am not sure of MSM - I have a Dr. app t with my Naturopath on Thursday I will ask.
ReplyDeleteYes, I am taking omega 3 and antioxidants. now your reply disappeared...hmmm
MSM is sulfur really. It is amazing how many people are deficient in it and what all that deficiency brings about. Of course check with the doctor. Curcumin is great! It's packed with stuff our cells just love! Can't say that by not taking this you've developed the problems, but it's a supplement that has a remarkable range of benefits and worth taking even if you don't "feel" differently with it added in to your mix. Your cells will know!
