Anti-aging Tips

I think the only time I really, really wanted to be older was when I was 12.  I couldn't WAIT to be a teenager!  How about you?

Now anti-aging - the term at least - I don't like.  It's very, well, anti.  Face it, kiddos, we are all getting older so no sense in all this anti stuff, right?  I've made peace with the number of my age (gulp, sort of) and I'm taking a pro-active approach to all this.  I want to feel good, have energy, keep in shape physically and mentally.  So the "rules" for this, which happen to be anti-aging tips are very simple.  I like simple and these little tips are working great for me obviously since my doctor doesn't believe my age - in a good way!

1.  Antioxidants - lots of fresh fruit and veggies, supplemented with additional anti-oxidants, the best of which is astaxanthin.  Also vitamin D

2.  Drink lots of water - a glass of wine now and then maybe - but nothing else other than herbal iced or hot teas.  My one cup of coffee a day I cannot do without or there would be dead bodies in my house I'm sure.

3.  Eat REAL food - no fast food, no processed foods, no packaged nuthin!  Eat organic as much as possible, only whole grains but very little bread regardless.

4. Exercise - oh don't groan on me now.  Make it fun!  Try classes like Zumba, get a bike and ride it, go for a walk at a pace like you are late for a date or something important.  Vary it daily so you don't groan on me that it is boring.  Your heart doesn't complain it's bored of beating does it?  But it has a much harder time doing just that one thing if you are screwing up not exercising and eating right.

5.  Have an attitude of gratitude.  You may think whining or bitching doesn't affect your health but it does - its been scientifically proven your thoughts affect your cells. (Read Candice Pert if you don't believe this)
Whatever it is upsetting you, let it go.  Give up the need to be right.  It's not worth aging faster is it?  What possibly could be???  Count to 20, breathe deeply and think about something wonderful - your best vacation ever, a precious memory, somebody you really love, or go hug your dog.  Dogs love you no matter what.

6.  Throw out the numbers and just do not let an old person IN.  Be who you are, dress the way you want to and skip down the road if you feel like it.  It is courageous to flick those numbers away and just BE.  So much of aging is mental and if it is mental then you have a choice about how to think about it.

7.  Avoid toxins in your home and personal products as much as you can.  I have many articles in my archives about this issue.  When you start doing your due diligence on this you may be as shocked as I was.  And this includes especially NOT using plastic bottled water.

8.  Keep reading my blog.   Yes - seriously.  It's all about health and wellness because I AM all about it.  And if you are healthy, the chronology just doesn't matter!  My blogging file is stuffed - know there is a ton more healthy info coming.  So do stay tuned.

So that's the Great Eight in a nutshell.  I hope you are having a terrific summer!  Have a ball!

  1. Hi Susan .. great eight .. so important and really quite easy to do .. we need to take personal responsibility for us .. exercise is the one I need to address .. after the necessity of being with my mother after her strokes.

Hope you get lots of reads .. cheers Hilary

  2. Hi Hilary! I love simple and this list really is! I think we all just hate the word exercise, it sounds so boring and chore-like. Maybe we should just strive for "activity"?

  3. Susan, I've just read your July posts and somewhere you say, if I remember rightly (I've read so much today) that nutritionists are not dieticians and I read that as a suggestion that they come with different schools of thought.

Can you write a blog outlining the difference? I am a health researcher who has become totally disillusioned with modern medicine and am exploring nutrition and its impact on my own health and ageing.

  4. Hi Harriet - Indeed there is a difference between the two schools of thought. Because dieticians are licensed, they are controlled and expected to follow ALL government regulations. This would include supporting/believing in the FDA, the USDA and all the nonsense they spew out as well as being cozy with the conventional medicine route (the AMA and doctors, drugs etc).
As I said in my blog, I could not swallow that at all. One of the reasons I went to the schools that I did was to stay away from all that and research food and natural herb alternatives to all that "the other side" promotes. If you want to discuss further (I'd be happy to!) please send me an email - joyisours@sbcglobal.net as I think another blog on the subject at this time would be overkill.
Thank you SO much for your interest and support!

I still wish the weight would just disappear - it is truly aging me..

  6. Hi Patricia! Have to make this fun! I think as soon as stuff becomes not-fun, life is over! There is always a fun outlook on everything, even if sometimes we have to push ourselves to find it!

  7. You BET I'll keep reading your blog. GRATEFUL for it!

And I'll make Today's Path a sidebar button soon. Just one button ahead of yours.

I love about not letting the old person IN!

Antioxidants? I'm hungry now. Well, hungrier. Why are all the post I'm reading this afternoon about FOOD??

I'm dreaming about La Madeleine's ceasar salad. So good!

  9. Hi Jannie! There is a LOT to that not letting an old person in - just listen to people over 50 and their lame excuses for not doing sports or activities. I have a few friends that are constantly bemoaning the fact that they are getting older. I want to say, "Yeah, so???"

  10. Hi Peggy! Oh wow, doesn't that just thrill you to pieces?! I hope someday I'll see medical doctors more open to natural alternatives to their drug arsenals! I just don't know how much evidence they need! Boggles the mind!

  12. Thanks for sharing the tips on anti-aging. I am looking forward to the next tips involving aging gracefully. Overall, nutrition, rest, clinical treatment and good genes are attributed to having a younger look despite one's age. supplements canada

  14. GREAT eight!

As the comedian George Burns said, "If I'd known I was gonna live this long, I'd taken better care of myself!

  15. I do EVERYTHING on your list. Now I know the great importance of vit. D. I always "protected" myself from the sun here in NM because I was mostly outside. I got a 'Sun Splash' UVA/UVB panel to use besides only 'protecting' my face--I'm vain.

I ordered a year's supply of astaxanthin because the price is going up now. I don't need it though, because I have a blender ($479 but 20% refund through my Foodnerd group.) It pulverizes my anti-oxident greens (kale, parsley etc) instantly with fruit---De-Lic-Ious!

I'm an exercise nut. Have been the last 50 years.
