I joined a health club two months ago. I didn't think walking the dogs really counted unless I was running with them - like a real cardio work out, lots of sweat and all. Yuck. That's why I always loved yoga - no sweat.
I splurged and got a trainer for a few weeks to get me rolling with a routine that will shape/firm me up and also address cardio. It's been great for me but my dogs walks have been abbreviated. I keep thinking I'll jog with them - well, maybe.....soon.....or not.
My club has tons of classes included with your membership. So I signed up for Zumba. Whoa, what a workout - get the resuscitator! And sweat? Yep, Soaking wet. Here's a video of what Zumba is all about in case it is as new to you as it was to me. Note the lack of senior citizens in this video! And for techies in the crowd here, one hour of this burns between 490 - 620 calories per hour, depending on how much hopping you are doing throughout - I tend to fade toward the end of class, but it is such a hoot! My hips can not believe I am making them do this! ha! The music gets progressively faster as the hour (yes, an hour of this) goes on - the steps get faster. It all means I laugh more! Keeping up with the instructor has eluded me so far but I know I'm improving. I don't watch the clock, just my heart monitor!
Do you Zumba? Does this look like fun to you?
I LOVE your video. I have always LOVED dance. I've joined every dance group in town. Wish I had majored in that instead of organ. I LOVE exercising. I LOVE to feel great after exercising!

You do this for a whole hour?? I'm impressed. More than impressed, actually! I didn't even know what zumba was. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Cynthia! I've always loved dance too - didn't realize how totally out of shape I was dance-wise until I started Zumba. It really does feel great when we're done, you are right about that!
ReplyDeleteHi Maryse! Yeah it was a long hour the first class I did - I kept looking at the clock in the back of the room thinking I'm not going to make it, I'm not going to make it. Shame on me for such negativity, eh? I'd never heard of it til a month ago either. Crazy class but I love it. I was quite a dancer in my youth. This is a challenge at this age! Believe me, I don't look as good as the dancers in this video, haha!
ReplyDeleteYeah baby, I'm with you all the way on that one!! I have been taking hip hop classes, as my boys are way into it. Zumba is on my list.
ReplyDeleteOne day you and I will meet somewhere in Latin America, drink coconut milk with tequila and Zumba with all the other sexy mamas.
Are you down with that?
Hi Jillian! Absolutely - I'm there! haha! Now if I could just get my body to cooperate and move that way for more than 30 seconds I'm good!
ReplyDeleteSusan,
ReplyDeleteWOW. I am very impressed with Zumba dancing:~)
I struggle to do any kind of line dancing. I couldn't even do the chicken dance. I love dancing, but can't seem to be coordinated enough to stay with the moves.
Dancing to me is one of the best cardio workouts. When I used to do ballroom dancing, I really got a workout.
Good for you for exercising and having fun while doing it.
Hi Sara! It's a hoot really! I cannot keep up the way I could have 30 years ago but I love it anyway. Just keep the video cameras away from me - I only look good doing any of this in my MIND'S eye! ha! You can't beat this for cardio tho! One hour of this and the old arteries have to be blown clean!
ReplyDeleteHi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI joined a gym a couple of months ago as well. Haven't tried zumba yet. I'm in some of the sculpting and body pump classes. I'm training for a 1/2 marathon in Seattle in June. I need to strengthen my core which running doesn't do.
Thanks for the link on sunscreen. I was going to order Arbonne baby sunscreen for my grandson that same day but it wasn't on the list. So I sent the list to my daughter to choose what to get.
I LOVE Zumba!!! It's by absolute favorite. My instructor is just a little firecracker and makes it so much fun. She "forgets" to watch the time (and I purposefully leave my watch off) and we tend to have hour and a half classes.
ReplyDeleteso glad you tried it and liked it!
Nope, I have never Zumbed. I think it would take me a while to get used to it. That burns even more calories than running, I think.
ReplyDeleteGood for you, Susan, good for you!!
xoxo
Hi Tess! I can testify that my entire body ached from this, ha-ha, core and all! There is a core class though that I've been thinking about trying but it runs right before the Zumba - I know I couldn't (or shouldn't) attempt both one after another or I'd burn up my heart monitor! ha!
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy! It's really a hoot, isn't it? My instructor is a fire cracker too and lots of fun. It doesn't seem like a workout when its fun but godonlyknows it surely is!
ReplyDeleteHi Jannie! Oh I think you'd love it - the music keeps ya going!
ReplyDeleteHa! Love your post. I have done Zumba a few times and YESSSSS it is a great workout! Glad you are having fun with it. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Kelly! I'm sure you are better at Z than me! haha! I'm just getting to the point that I'm not screaming out for a resuscitator. I laugh a LOT! Discovered I should wear only black pants/shorts for this cuz the sweat marks in my blue ones looked totally like I wet my pants. (Altho, who knows???? haha)
ReplyDeleteHi Susan
ReplyDeleteCame over from Blogging without a Blog.
I think that dancing the Zumba would definately get me fit and the video is great.
At the moment I do a little walking every day and lift weights during the week.
Putting on a little muscle is a great way to burn off those caleries and I've never looked better.
Hi there Keith! Thanks for the visit! I did a lot of walking too, with my dogs almost daily, but felt I wasn't getting "enough". Didn't take long in a Zumba class to tell me I was right about that, haha! Somehow the music makes me forget I'm exercising - eventually! If you try it, let me know what you think.
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna try this Zumba. I love dancing too it is a great way for people of all ages to get and stay in shape.
ReplyDeleteHi Lynne! Thanks for stopping by! The fun part of Zumba is the music (if you like it, and I do!) has a tendency to carry you along and sure makes the time go quickly. The fact that you get one terrific workout is a real bonus! Let me know how you like it!
