Reprogram Your Subconscious by Gale Glassner Twersky

I am so excited to review this book!  Not only is the book superb - the author is a dear friend of mine!  Unbeatable delight!  Gale Glassner Twersky has been a hypno-counselor for many years and is so whole-heartedly committed to helping others experience the fullness and wonder of their lives.  Her book is a true testament to that and she lays out everything you need to know to experience the path of getting what you want.   Yes, really - reprograming your subconscious!

Hypnosis you say?  Yes.  In Gale's own words "Hypnosis has certainly had its challenges as a credible modality burdened with misconceptions and associations with individuals who sadly have used it inappropriately.  The movies erroneously depicted hypnosis as mind-control by the bad guys.  Entertainment hypnosis provided laughs for audiences as hypnotized individuals performed zany antics that normally the participants would never do.  No wonder it has taken hypnosis this long to gain general public acceptance!"

Hypnosis today is used for health care, for self-improvement and other fields as well.  As Gale points out, clinical research now concludes hypnosis provides a positive, noninvasive adjunct to conventional medicine.  And if you have never been hypnotized or practiced self-hypnosis, let me assure you it is so similar to being in a deep meditation, in the zone.  You will hear background noise just the same.  It is not anything weird.  Quite the contrary.  After a session of hypnosis, either with Gale or by myself (self-hypnosis) I am so well rested and relaxed it's just fabulous!

I learned SO much from Gale's book and it was hard to pick just one or two quotes - there are about 50 I highlighted in the book!  I'd love to share what she says about getting to know your subconscious.

One:  Your subconscious advocates for you.  It wants to help protect you and keep you from phystical, mental, emotional pain.  It also wants to please you as well as secure pleasure and happiness for you.

Two:  When you are in the Altered Consciousness State of Alpha, Theta or Delta, your thoughts and suggestions are able to reach the suggestible part of your subsconscious responsible for creating your subconscious beliefs, mindsets, associations, feelings and behaviors.

Three:  When your subconscious perceives what it believes you want, or when it perceives what you believe is your reality, it cooperates by bringing those things literally into your current reality even though they may not have been there before.  Additionally your subconscious acts making these choices without considering any present or future adverse consequences of its programming for you.

Four:  Unfortunately once your subconscious has downloaded what it perceives is your belieft, mindset, association, feeling or behavior, its responsibilities pertaining to that download are finished.  Its job description does not include revisiting UNDER ITS OWN VOLITION its decisions, re-evaluating or revising any Subconscious Programs.

Five:  Your subconscious often perceives and then makes conclusions that correspond with symbolic, metaphoric language.  For instance, when you are experiencing strong emotions that can put you into the Altered Consciousness State, your Suggestible Subconscious is activated and listens to you.  If you say that someone makes you sick to your stomach, your subconscious takes you literally, believes you and instantly creates that condition as your new reality.  Before you know, you are truly feeling sick to your stomach, thanks to your Subconscious Programming.

Six:  When you are a chile, under the age of twelve, your Suggestible Subconscious is open to accepting as reality what the words and actions of authority figures such as parents, teachers and religious leaders show is their truth, their actual reality.  After age twelve, others are generally unable to so easily reach and direct your Suggestible Subconscious responsible for creating your Subconscious Programming.  (The exception to this occurs when as an adult you are experiencing circumstances of strong emotional reactions to what is being perceived.  The experiencing of strong emotional reactions instantly can transition you into an Altered State of Consciousness.  By entering that, you are in the same frequency that opens up dirct communications to your Suggestible Subconscious.  Bingo, you may have instantly downloaded new Subconscious Programming without any clue that it has happened.)

Seven:  Your subconscious seems to respond to negatively framed commands by perceiving them as opposite to what is commanded.  The command DO NOT WORRY therefore is interpreted as Do Worry.  Perhaps it is your Subconscious Programming that rejects your being told what to do and motivates you to do the opposite."

I realized so many things from reading Gale's book.  I mean, at 63 I thought I had a good handle on myself ya know?  I have some things I'm working on as a result of this book that I know will help me tremendously.  I could share quote after quote - this book is such a gem and Gale's writes it with all the energy and love that every being on this planet craves.  It is a practical way to approach all the things we read about from Wayne Dyer, Eckhart Tolle and other gurus we put on the best seller lists.  Let your buck stop here!  Seriously.

You will get more than a book too.  There is a CD "Relax, Release and Dream On" to listen to.  (If you have ever had trouble as I've heard many of you tell me, getting into meditation, this is THE ticket for you.)  It is suggested that you listen to this CD while awake and then play it when you go to bed each night.  You don't have to be awake to benefit - your subconscious will hear it even if you are sleeping.  Talk about programming, huh?

Is there anyone who would not benefit from this book?  I asked Gale.  She said it will help everyone if they are willing to give it a chance.  If your mind is closed and you believe there is no possibility this will help you, you are right.  But if there is at least a tiny crack, a willingness to open your mind this book will help you.  Make your own decision.

What I loved the most was the next thing she said "Not only will you learn about yourself, but you will learn about others and truly understand why they act the way they do."

We surely cannot understand others without a good understanding of ourselves.  You won't find a better book out there that will do both!

Who are you when you are free of Faulty Subconscious Programming?  Are you who you are because of your faulty programs?  Would WOULD you be without those faulty programs directing your life?  Who COULD you be without those faulty programs?

Wouldn't you like to know?

Gunky Oil

The Associated Press recently shared that of the 212 chemicals the CDC reported finding in human blood last year, more than 180 of those chemicals started out in oil or natural gas.

Seriously?  I have 180 chemicals in my blood?  GASP!  I set about trying to figure out how they snuck into me and what I had to do to get them OUT.

Start by checking labels.  If you see propylene glycol in things (look at your labels now).  Its was originally formulated as an anti-freeze.  Some of my sources said it is found in ice creams, packaged cakes and other junk food but is really common in personal care products.  We cannot forget those!  Our skin absorbs so much of what we put on it - it is our largest organ - that you may want to start watching just WHAT it is absorbing.

I know some of you are groaning - oh geez another thing to watch out for, another thing Suzen wants me to be afraid of!  No I don't want you to be afraid of anything!  I am sharing what I am learning and I think there is plenty of stuff out there I have been unconsciously using/abusing and I cannot be the only one, eh?  Here is what I found on Natural News - you can check other sources too because there are plenty of them out there that all say generally the same thing:
"The problem with petrochemicals is that they're hormone disruptors, and hormones affect our moods, sleep, growth, sexual development - and essentially the functioning of all our organs. With time and accumulation, petrochemicals can also damage our nerves, liver, and brain. And these chemicals can be at the root of birth defects, asthma, cancer - and more.

A Carnegie Mellon chemistry professor explains that the underlying premise of the petrochemical industry is that these molecules will "do what they're designed for and not interact with life. What we're finding is that premise is wrong - profoundly wrong." The professor also explains that a "whole world of low-dose (health) effects" are being discovered from petrochemical accumulation in the body."

I would like to think that as I clean out the chemicals from my cabinets, drawers and cupboards, I am also cleaning out my blood.  I don't know about you, but the thought of all those chemicals inside me isn't a very pleasant thought.  It simply cannot be a good thing.

Another thought - if you haven't added parsley yet (go re-read that blog on the Fluffy thing on your plate) it would be a good thing as it helps to purify the blood.  And it sounds to me like it has a lot of work to do on mine!

Are You ZAPPED by Your Cell Phone?

I was asked by TLC Book Tours to review ZAPPED by Ann Louise Gittleman.  The sub-title is "Why Your Cell Phone Shouldn't Be Your Alarm Clock and 1,68 Ways to Outsmart the Hazards of Electronic Pollution."    This is another thing we need to pay attention to - in addition to what we consume in our diets.  There is a lot out there we need to become informed about from research and NOT clever marketing!

I don't personally use my cell phone all that much so I thought perhaps this book wouldn't be that informative for me.  Wrong!  We are all surrounded by electromagnetic fields of energy and get zapped all the time.  Cell phone usage, or dependency, is only one major thing we should know about.

For instance, I learned that when I DO use my cell phone to make a call, I should not put it up to my ear as I am waiting to connect the call.  That is when the most damaging "microwaves" are - when the call is connecting.

We've all been "told" there were "thousands of studies" proving cell phone safety, and yet when the Wireless Technology Research center was set up with a $28 Million Dollar for studies with George Carlo, Ph.D., he couldn't find any other studies!  As soon as his own studies started showing DNA damage and other nightmarish bad things, the telecom industry quickly distanced themselves from its own research, slashed the funding, and tried to stop public dissemination of the findings.

What a familiar story.  This is done all the time with food testing, chemical testing etc.  As soon as the studies show what is contrary to the marketing, the plug is pulled and gags put on the research scientists who are going to spill the beans.  Well Carlo DID manage to write a book about it "Cell Phones: Invisibile Hazards in the Wireless Age" but it did trigger more studies.  Of course you must look at who FUNDED the studies to measure what little truth you may derive from their conclusions!

There is much information in ZAPPED  about different fields of energy that are harmful to us but I just keep focusing on the cell phone usage because really that is the easiest for us to do something about.  Here are just a few stats to consider:

A Swedish study (home of Nokia and Ericsson btw) found those who used the phones most often and for the longest period of time had a 240 percent increased risk for a maliganant tumor on the side of the head where they typically held the phone.

A multinational study in 2009 found that people who use mobile phones before the age of 20 are more than 5 times as likely to develope brain tumors.

This book has lots of suggestions for us to cut back on our exposure and my favorite and newly implemented one is to use the speaker phone, to not carry my cell phone in a pocket, switching ears regularly if I AM using the phone and keeping calls short.

Hubs and I are both relieved that our kids grew up before 6 yr. old kids had cell phones!  I sure do wonder what parents today are thinking!  At least do some research on the potential damage to these little people first!  We do not have to surrender to brilliant marketing do we?

There are electromagnetic fields in our homes too.  I don't want you to think this is just a book about the potential harms of cell phones.  Very good suggestions throughout this book on how we can cut down on our exposure to something that you may not SEE but it is zapping your body just the same.   There is information on computers, microwaves, and other sources of this electronic polution in our homes.   In today's electronic world, this effects - and affects - everyone.

Although my blogs are generally diet/food related, this EMF subject is something you are "eating" and perhaps do not know it.  Minimize exposure to anything that has been shown to have icky potential - that's my motto and I'm stickin' to it!

The Fluffy Green Thing On Your Plate

Sometimes it is the "bit player" who steals the show in the end.  Sometimes we ignore a little fluffy green thing on our plate, the "decoration"?  I'm speaking of parsley.  Does anyone ever really eat the stuff?  Do you?

I read a lot about this fluffy plant.  It packs some powerful health benefits.  It helps the heart, combats fatigue, helps with cholesterol, supports the adrenals, strengthens teeth, helps to build bones, prevent birth defects, eliminates bloating! (Well gosh, that alone should be enough.  Maybe when restaurants put it on our plate they have known that all along?  Hmm.  One wonders!)  It also helps to reduce inflammation and helps solve kidney problems, and it provides general immune support!  That's a lot of "stuff" for a piece of fluffy green on your plate, don't you agree?  It is LOADED with nutrients.

This fluffy thing is  a high-chlorophyll blood purifier.  It contains vitamins A and C, beta carotene, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, magnganese, potassium, folic acid, sulful and many B vitamins.  What really is amazing (not that all the above isn't) parsley also contains an oil that inhibits tumors - particularly in the lungs!

You need LOTS of parsley for a major role like inhibiting tumor growth but it is easy to deal with if you juice.  I have a regular cocktails of 3 apples, 2 carrots, a handful of spinach, parsley and the juice of one half lemon, sometimes more.  I like my juice with a tart bite.  If you don't, add some agave or stevia to sweeten it.
You can create any juice recipe you want to - just add a handful of parsley to it.

For those of you without a good juicer, you could try using your blender perhaps.  I've found my juicer to be the appliance I use most in my kitchen.  And since I've been juicing, I take far fewer supplemental vitamins.  I know what I get in my juice is the real deal - fresh and easier to swallow too!  Just eating parsley is ok too if you put it in salads, soups etc.  By itself it would be hard to eat very much of it.

Which is probably WHY it sits on your plate in the restaurant and goes back into the kitchen from whence it came.

Think again about ignoring it!

Too Much of a Good Thing

Poor fat!  Yes - fat!  It is blamed for everything under the sun - don't eat fat, restrict your fat, learn your fats and blah blah blah.  If fat really WAS the culprit it is made out to be then shouldn't all these low-fat, no-fat diets WORK?  Well they don't seem to be if you have your eyes open.  Truth is we do need some fat in our diets, preferably from Olive Oil, but I'm digressing already.  I want to address another subject there is so much misinformation about!

It's protein.

If you listen to the dairy and meat industry, they will have you consuming protein as if your life depended on it in amounts that will do you more harm than good.  Their  information is more about their profit than your health.  The typical American diet consists of nearly twice the protein we should be having and we are really compromising our health.  The body needs protein to function, but too much of it and there are many problems.  Protein doesn't INCREASE energy.  It takes longer to digest than carbs and you may think you feel more energy but it is really stimulation - the hyper kind.

"Nervous energy, fidgety foot-bouncers, finger-tappers, channel changers are manifesting symptoms of excess protein consumption.  Proudly, but mistakenly, they see themselves energetic.  In reality, they are hyper-stimulated." says Dr. Ted Morter.  "The paradox of protein is that it is not only essential but also potentially health-destroying."

Dr. Andrew Weil, in a lecture series I listened to, also recommends watching your protein consumption.  I've heard this from enough reliable sources to have integrated this into my health counseling.  Dr. Weil suggests that our protein consumption should only be 10-20% of our total calorie intake, and less if you have any liver or kidney problems, allergies or autoimmune problems.   Dr. Morter recommends 25 grams of protein - pretty much the same, just measured differently.  If you seriously add up the protein you consume daily chances are you are way over that.  Too much protein means your body is hard at work trying to digest the overload, correct the imbalance and still keep you alive and well.  It is a burden on the body!

I suggested to a few people I am working with to watch their protein intake.  Within a week a few said they had more energy!  This is not at all unusual.  If you are feeling sluggish try cutting back on your protein and see how you feel.  I know when I cut back on my protein consumption over the last year I not only had more energy but I lost weight too.

How to figure - quickly - how much protein you eat?  Think first of the usual  dinner.  Meat and two sides or one side and a salad.  The meat is usually taking up the largest portion of the plate.  Or maybe it's a fish, doesn't matter - we are just talking protein at dinner here.  Now switch this dinner plate to have the meat/fish take up only 1/4 of plate and fill the rest with veggies.  This is balanced.  It is not what we've been "told" but what we have been doing is making us sick and fat.  Time to tune in to what the body REALLY needs and not listen to what the profiteers are cramming down our throats, quite literally.

When I started counting my daily protein I was amazed that my morning oatmeal had 6 grams, the handful of walnuts 4 grams, and 4 grams for 1/2 cup of milk.  That's 14 grams for breakfast!  Consider if I had bacon and eggs and toast which can average out to be between 48-55 grams.  Here are just a few items with the protein count:

15 grams - 1/2 cup of cottage cheese
8-12 grams - 1 cup of yougurt (check label, they vary)
22 grams - 3 1/2 oz of most fish
30 grams - 1 chicken breast
28 grams - 4 oz. hamberger patty
42 grams - 6 oz. steak

a few veggies and etc:

asparagus - 2 grams
black beans - 15 grams for 1 cup
broccoli 1/2 cup cooked - 3 grams
carrots - 1 gram per carrot
1 cup pasta - 7 grams (av.)
1/2 cup brown rice - 3 grams

You can a lot more veggies for your daily protein requirements and not go hungry.  It's a great way to cut back on meat too.  Look at the protein on the labels of food you eat - don't forget the bread!  It is so easy to over do protein consumption.  I did for years!  I also used to have indigestion, bloating, heartburn and a myriad of complaints, not daily but often.  No more though.  I think I have a good balance and boy since I feel great, I want to STAY this way!

Obviously protein isn't the only think we need to watch, (more later on everyone's favorite - fat - and of course a carb lesson as well) but to restore our bodies to the ultimate in health and  to regain a little control on possible weight issues, this is HUGE.  And since I heard back from a few people that reducing their protein actually gave them more energy, I thought this a cool thing to share here.  It is balance we are after for good health so eating in a balanced fashion sure gets things going in the right direction!

You know how the pH of soil can make it or break it when you are gardening?  We are no different.  We need a balanced pH level.  One thing that will totally screw up this balance (and chemically it is a nightmare inside your body) is an over-consumption of protein.  Protein is acid, not alkaline.  It requires a lot of organic sodium (we get this from fruits/veggies---I'm not talking table salt!) to break down this acid causing mess in our stomachs.  If we have too much of this food-gone-acid to deal with, our bodies may pull calcium out of our BONES to help digest it.  Nice of it to do that so we survive our dinner without instant death, but do you really want that happening?

There were studies done on the correlation of obesity and broken bones.  It isn't the weight (necessarily) that causes knees and legs to break - it's the lack of strong bones.  If you consider that it took a LOT of protein to get that overweight in the first place, can you see how the body dealt with it?  It could have taken calcium out of the persons bones to help digest the protein-gone-acid foods.

High protein diets are not in your long term best interest and only help athletes during training to build muscle mass - and don't forget they are athletes - exercising, working out, constantly.  Are you?  Chances are no.  The Atkins diet (which hubs went on a few years ago) is nothing but protein, meat, cheese, eggs and to cook and watch this consumption of his made me literally ill.  He did loose weight.  It was fluid.  Remember protein does a huge number on the kidneys?  Yeah, the poor kidneys!  This is NOT balance.

As for protein supplements/shakes, again if you are not an athlete working out for hours every day, do not take these.  Dr. Andrew Weil was pretty emphatic about this and it only makes sense to me after studying body chemistry.  He also said any meat you eat should be organic and skinned, absolutely no cured meats (i.e. lunch meat, bacon, sausages) due to the high nitrate content.  (A note to bacon lovers, there IS a no-nitrate bacon that I use VERY sparingly on very rare occasions!)  The milk proteins are also a problem for a lot of people causing allergies, asthma and sinus conditions.

I'm sure the dairy and meat industry would like to gag me, but if you do some on line research you will see I am certainly not the only voice out there with this message.  I know it challenges a lot of beliefs in the old systems, the traditional diet choices, and what we had been taught earlier.  Please understand and see the connections.   It is money in those industries bank!  It is not anything to do with what is healthy and truly good for your body.

And I leave you with this thought - A while back the slogan for the dairy industry was "Milk - it does a body good!"  They had to change it because finally they were confronted with the truth by many advocates of health and truth.  Milk does NOT do a body good!  Small victory, but it's a start.  Did anyone notice?
